If you’re not aware of the context that goes into this game, you must be living under a rock. The big story that has shaken the World Cup in the last few days, involving Donald Trump’s intervention and FIFA’s suspension of US star Folarin Balogun’s red card, has become an international event that everyone is talking about.
However, the Belgians had the last laugh. They pushed their way into the opener before Malik Tillman’s deflected free-kick brought the home side level but it was one-way traffic after that.
As Charles de Ketelaere moved into second, a series of humiliating errors allowed Hans Vanaken to make it three and Romelu Lukaku to shoot fourth. The great striker even rubbed salt in the wounds by doing the ‘Trump dance’ at the celebration.
Despite all the fury in the preparations, Mauricio Pochettino’s team did not play and were brutally eliminated from the home tournament. Belgium will face Spain in the quarter-finals.

The magazine cover stared back at me, displaying David Beckham’s first billion at every airport from Los Angeles to Philadelphia last month. Finally, out of curiosity, I picked up the book and flipped through the pages; I wondered if there really was anything more to be said about the World Cup’s most ubiquitous man, who markets himself as a puppet for everything from Bank of America to Lays Crisps to DIY’s Home Depot to Stella Artois beer. Hydration break at the World Cup? Then it will be Beckham time. He will be featured in at least one of the upcoming TV commercials.
The Forbes article actually offered more details about Beckham’s efforts to make money. The magazine’s interview with him coincides with back-to-back photo shoots at the mansion his production company, Studio 99, has built for a speaker company and a gadget maker. Several more are planned in the coming days.
The US World Cup economy’s obsession with a 51-year-old man who retired from football 13 years ago seems indicative of an existential dependence on global marketing properties – Beckham, [Lionel] Messi, [Cristiano] Ronaldo, [Kylian] Mbappe – to wade through the avalanche of football content. Excellent new players don’t do this anymore. “I build things that will outlast me,” Beckham says in his Forbes piece. And yes, the chips, beer and DIY stores will still be here when he’s gone.

It’s not often that we come across an audience worth more than the sum of the highly paid players on the field.
But Amazon CEO and businessman Jeff Bezos, who boasts a net worth of £195 billion, joined in the US’s humiliation by Belgium.
He was photographed in the stands with his wife, Lauren Sanchez, and the rest of the celebs present were a bit of an eclectic mix; In the VIP section, Paris Hilton and Pearl Jam lead singer Eddie Vedder appeared on big screens during fluid breaks.
Spain’s 1-0 win over Iberian rivals Portugal was not for the purists, but the fans don’t care one bit. This also applies to Spanish Hollywood actor Javier Bardem, who was wearing his home jersey and cheering on his country in the stands at Dallas Stadium in Arlington.

VIRAL MOMENT OF THE DAY
Tuesday’s World Cup breakfast is centered on Cristiano Ronaldo, and that goes for the day’s viral moments, too.
Superstar rapper Drake also joined them in the last 32 win, where they beat Croatia 2-1 in Toronto last week. After Ronaldo scored the equalizer, Drake quipped ‘Where Is He’. Burning Bridges song from last album Iceman.
The pair posed for photos after the match and Ronaldo showed off his “Where Is He” expression as he made his way to the stadium ahead of Monday’s defeat against Spain.

There was a transition from happiness to sadness for Ronaldo, who burst into tears when the final whistle of the match blew on Monday.
For the 41-year-old, this is his last World Cup and the emotion of another defeat and what it means was abundantly clear at the final whistle.
Ronaldo has won the World Cup during his career, and the traveling Portuguese fans applauded as they realized he had not added the major prize to his CV.

1. Will the FA appeal Jarell Quansah’s red card?
This has been a story that has developed overnight, but will the FA actually appeal the red card given to Jarell Quansah?
This comes in light of FIFA’s controversial U-turn after US striker Folarin Balogun was shown a red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina last week following an intervention by President Donald Trump. As a result, Balogun controversially started the USA’s loss to Belgium.
Quansah was given his marching orders in the 54th minute following a VAR review for the challenge against Mexican Jesus Gallardo.
The defender will now face a one-match ban, meaning he will miss Saturday’s quarter-final against Norway, but the FA have not ruled out appealing as internal discussions are ongoing and all options remain open.

2. Will Lionel Messi take the lead in the Golden Shoe race?
Argentina’s captain and icon Lionel Messi shares the Golden Boot race with French captain Kylian Mbappe and Norwegian striker Erling Haaland. All three of them have 7 goals, but Messi can take the lead with his goal against Egypt.
He became the World Cup’s all-time top scorer earlier this tournament and don’t be surprised if he extends that on Tuesday.

3. Could Switzerland violate Colombia’s resolute defense?
Colombia have not conceded a goal since the bizarre equalizer from Uzbekistan in the opening match of the World Cup. Since then, only three shots on target have been allowed in three matches against Ghana, Portugal and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Colombia tested opposing goalkeepers 23 times in these three offensive matches. It will be a difficult task for Switzerland.

TODAY’S GAMES
Argentina v Egypt (17:00, Atlanta, ITV 1)
World Cup champions Argentina will continue their quest for back-to-back titles with their first match against Egypt on Tuesday.
Both teams have survived major scares in their last 32 games; Argentina got past Cape Verde in extra time; Egypt needed penalties to beat Australia.
Egypt may cause trouble for Argentina with Omar Marmoush and talisman Mohamed Salah in their ranks, but their rivals have their biggest trump card in Messi.
Prediction: Argentina will win
Argentina are favorites against Egypt in the World Cup last 16 match in Atlanta on Tuesday.
Switzerland v Colombia (21:00, Vancouver, ITV 1)
Switzerland will face Colombia in the last 16 match. The Swiss team has not reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup since it hosted the tournament in 1954.
If they are to put an end to this madness, they will face a determined Colombia defense (see above) that also has a goal threat, spearheaded by Luis Diaz.
Don’t be surprised if all of South America draws in the quarter-finals.
