Man dies after shooting on Brunswick Street

A man has died after being shot in Melbourne’s inner north.

Police found the man with life-threatening injuries at the corner of Brunswick and King William streets in Fitzroy after hearing gunshots just after midnight Saturday.

Emergency services responded to the victim, whose identity has not yet been officially determined, but he died at the scene.

Police taped off the area, about 100 meters from Fitzroy police station, after crowds of onlookers gathered in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Police said they were looking for people who fled the scene by car before arriving at the scene.

The family of the victim, understood to be a young man, left flowers at the scene, just meters from Fitzroy police station, on Saturday morning. Detectives were seen going door to door at nearby properties later in the morning.

Uncle Crow, a long-time Fitzroy resident, said he understood the incident was “about youth”.

“We are a close-knit community here and we will support [the family] “to the best of our ability,” he said.
