Who is Neal Mohan? The ‘quiet-spoken’ Stanford grad, YouTube chief is Time CEO of the Year

YouTube CEO Neal Mohan was named Time’s CEO of the Year 2025. Describing Mohan, TIME said the pilot of the world’s most powerful distraction machine was “surprisingly smooth.”

“He’s quiet-talking, thoughtful, and hard to get angry with. He likes watching sports, going to his daughters’ dance recitals, and revealing white shirts, those are just normal things.” Time in his report.

Mohan has been the CEO of the social media and online video sharing platform since 2023 and took over the role after Google’s founding employee Susan Wojcicki decided to resign. He is also a member of Starbucks’ Board of Directors.

Neal Mohan became part of YouTube’s parent company, Google, in 2008. Before becoming CEO, he was the company’s chief product officer.

Where was Neal Mohan born?

Born in Lafayette, Indiana, Neal Mohan reportedly spent most of his childhood growing up in the United States before moving to Lucknow, India, with his family in 1985 when he was 12 years old.

Mohan completed his graduation in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 1996, his LinkedIn profile mentions. The YouTube chef later completed his MBA from the Ivy League school in 2005, where he was an Arjay Miller Scholar.

The Arjay Miller Scholarship at Stanford Graduate School of Business recognizes outstanding academic achievement in a program among the top 10% of the graduating MBA class.

Neal Mohan is not only a Stanford graduate, but also a member of the advisory council of the Stanford GSB and the Council on Foreign Relations.

Mohan said of having to learn and study Sanskrit: “It’s incredibly phonetic and rule-oriented… It was basically like learning to program a computer.”
