Doctors perform mechanical thrombectomy at city hospital

Doctors at Rela Hospital in Chennai successfully performed mechanical thrombectomy, a catheter-based procedure used to physically remove a blood clot from the pulmonary artery.
According to the press release, the procedure was performed on a 42-year-old patient who injured his left leg and later developed deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a condition in which a blood clot forms in the deep veins of the leg.
The clot eventually blocked blood flow to the heart. The patient suffered multiple heart attacks. Pulmonary embolism was diagnosed in the hospital’s emergency department and the thrombectomy was performed by vascular surgery consultant Shabnam Fathima A. with the help of a team of multidisciplinary experts.
