Ditching surcharge fees would save consumers $1.2b: RBA

July 15, 2025 09:09 | News

The Australian Central Bank wants to remove the additional fees on both the bank and credit cards with a movement that it expects to save the consumer more than $ 1 billion.

The Australian Reserve Bank’s review of the seller card payment costs suggests that EFTPOS, MasterCard and Visa Card transactions be scrapped in the scrapping of EFTPOS, MasterCard and Visa Card.

Reducing the limit on the exchange fees paid by enterprises – another proposal of the article – will save Australia’s $ 1.2 billion.

When a transaction takes place, a business is paid by a business to a customer’s card publisher.

The banks’ proposals go further than the federal government suggested before.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers said that the government was ready to charge the bank card transactions from the beginning of 2026, but it contains RBA’s credit cards.

It is estimated that consumers pay an additional $ 1.2 billion in payments each year, which is equivalent to $ 60 per adult using a card.

The report means that additional fees for scrapping also do not need to switch between payment methods to avoid a fee.

RBA Governor Michele Bullock said that both consumers and businesses benefit from the offer, as less Australian cash payments.

While customers avoid paying additional fees, businesses would no longer be forced to face costs to accept card payments.

Uz We think it is time to deal with some of these high costs and inefficiency in the system, ”he said.

“Payment view is always developing and it is very important that we survive to keep it safe, competitive and efficient.”

RBA suggested to remove his own ban on the rules of ‘no deviation’ to scrape the wages.

It is waiting for card networks to follow the ‘non -swarcharge’ rules based on historical experiences and regulations in other judicial regions.

If this is not happening, the RBA Federal government proposes to prohibit additional wages.

The reduction of the limit on exchange fees by enterprises will generally benefit small enterprises as they pay higher wages.

The Central Bank found that small enterprises would be better $ 185 million under changes and 90 percent benefit.

In a proposal for better competition between nets, better transparency was proposed by forcing card networks and those who have large acquisitions to publish.

Ms. Bullock predicted that offers would lead to a lot of discussion between the businesses with additional fees, and that they will provide a six -week consultation period in their plans.

Any change will not start until July 2026.
