London fire LIVE: London Bridge blaze as black smoke seen for miles above Bermondsey | UK | News

A fire at a recycling center on Landmann Way in Bermondsey is sending thick black smoke across parts of London and causing major disruption to rail services. Dramatic eyewitness accounts emerged from passengers passing by the scene; one passenger claimed that the train was filled with smoke and people were screaming as they passed the fire.

London Fire Brigade said 15 fire engines and nearly 100 firefighters were at the scene battling the blaze, with two of the Brigade’s 32-metre spiral staircases being used to combat the flames from above.

The brigade said in a statement: “Fifteen fire engines and around 100 firefighters are battling a blaze at a recycling center on Landmann Way in Bermondsey. Local residents are advised to keep their windows and doors closed due to significant smoke in the area. Two of the Brigade’s 32-metre spiral ladders were deployed to the scene to attack the fire from above. Control Officers received the first of many calls at 5.32pm and fire brigades in Deptford, Old Kent Road, Greenwich and surrounding areas were deployed.” “We mobilized teams from the stations to the scene.”

Station Commander Wayne Bloomfield said the fire “could be a long-term incident” and crews would remain there until the morning.
