Woman gunned down in hail of 70 to 80 bullets in mistaken identity killing: Police
An innocent woman was killed at a gas station in Louisiana when gunmen fired 70 to 80 bullets into a car, apparently believing their target was in the car, according to police.
Hammond police said the gunman’s alleged target was in the car before the shooting, but not at the time of the shooting.
Hammond Police Chief Edwin Bergeron Jr. The suspects were following a car on a farm before gunfire erupted early Thursday, he said at a news conference.

“At some point [the alleged target] “I was in the vehicle and then got out of the vehicle to get in with someone else,” Bergeron said.
The victim’s car then left the farm and drove to a Chevron gas station, where the suspects followed, the chief said.
When the driver of the victim’s car got out and entered the gas station, the suspects “pulled up next to his car and started shooting,” Bergeron said.

Bergeron said the suspects opened fire between 70 and 80 times, killing 50-year-old Patricia Shepard, who was sitting in the car.
The chief said he was “an absolute innocent victim.” “He had no interest in that.”
Investigators are looking for at least two or three suspects, Bergeron said.

“We won’t rest until scumbags like this go to jail, until they kill an innocent woman in a car because they thought it was someone else,” he said.
Police said the suspects were driving a white 2008 Honda Civic that was stolen Tuesday in Pike County, Mississippi. Police said the vehicle’s Mississippi license plate number was PJY050 and the front passenger window was missing.
