Lancashire shaken by earthquake which ‘made a thunder noise’

Lancashire was hit by a 2.5 magnitude earthquake on Friday morning.

The earthquake shook the village of Silverdale at around 5am, with tremors reported as far away as Blackpool and Flookburgh.

The British Geological Survey said the earthquake was felt in the Morecambe Bay area, with residents reporting a “swift and sharp shaking” accompanied by “thunder” while others reported radiators and paintings shaking.

The earthquake came two weeks after a 3.3 magnitude tremor in the same region.

This incident occurred just off the coast of Silverdale, at a depth of 1.86 miles. Today’s earthquake occurred in the same region at a depth of 1.61 kilometers.

Residents near the epicenter of the previous earthquake told BGS that the quake “felt like an explosion underground” and was “so strong it shook the whole house.”

The BGS records between 200 and 300 earthquakes in the UK each year, but only 20 to 30 are strong enough for people to feel. Most tremors are so small that they are detected only by monitoring equipment, and the vast majority cause little or no damage.

This is a breaking story, more to come…
