Madurai property tax scam: Mayor’s husband granted bail with conditions

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court granted bail to Madurai Mayor Indrani’s husband Pon Vasanth on Thursday, October 9, 2025. Judge S. Srimathy granted bail with conditions.

Pon Vasanth is one of the accused in the property tax ‘scam’ in Madurai Corporation. The Special Investigation Team (SIT), probing the multi-crore scam, arrested him in Chennai on August 12.

The prosecution said the scam came to light in September 2024 when the then Madurai Corporation Commissioner C. Dinesh Kumar found some irregularities in the records and lodged a complaint with the police.

An audit team found that property taxes on 150 buildings were deliberately reduced without following proper procedures, and their review revealed irregularities in the records of UTIS, an online property tax management platform. The prosecutor’s office said the bribe was accepted to lower taxes.
