Celebrity Infinity cruise ship loses control in Greece, with scary malfunction

A cruise ship off the coast of Greece had an immediate scare last weekend, according to the local coast guard; This situation required the assistance of Greek authorities.
A passenger took to Reddit to describe a chaotic scene aboard the Celebrity Infinity cruise ship on Sunday, February 15. “The power went out at Piraeus (Athens) beach at 3am,” the Reddit user wrote.
The person continued on social media: “I saw a lot of tugs coming. No air conditioning (rooms are very stuffy), no lights, no running water, no flush toilets, no hot water/coffee, no elevators.”

According to a translated press release, the Hellenic Coast Guard Joint Search and Rescue Coordination Center notified Piraeus and Keratsini Port Authorities that “control of a cruise ship was lost…due to a malfunction in the electrical distribution panels in the sea area outside the port of Piraeus.”
Four tugboats helped Infinity arrive safely in port.

The ship’s next scheduled voyage, an 11-night cruise from Piraeus (Athens), Greece, was cancelled.

The ship can accommodate up to 2,170 passengers. It underwent a major renovation in 2015.
It was announced that the faulty ship will call at Piraeus, the main port of Athens, on February 15.

The passengers were on a 13-day cruise that left Barcelona on February 3; It would end in Piraeus-Athens on February 16.

The warning initially stated that the incident occurred on February 14, but the coast guard later changed the statement to say that the emergency occurred on February 15.

Celebrity Cruises has sent a letter to passengers booked for the upcoming Greek Islands and Türkiye voyage.
“We would like to share an important update regarding our upcoming cruise aboard Celebrity Infinity,” the letter read, as Cruise Fever reported.

The letter also detailed the loans and refunds that passengers would receive.
