All-party Meeting Breaks Logjam; LS To Take Up Discussion On Election Reforms On Dec. 9

New Delhi: In order to end the deadlock in the Parliament over the Opposition’s demand for a debate on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, an all-party meeting chaired by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla decided to hold the debate on the 150th Anniversary of ‘Vande Mataram’ from 12 noon on Monday and the debate on electoral reforms from 12 noon on Tuesday.
The resolution of the impasse has paved the way for smooth functioning of the Lok Sabha from tomorrow. The House witnessed adjournments from the start of the winter session of Parliament on Monday. Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju gave information about the decisions taken at the meeting attended by all parties.
In a post on he said. Rijiju had earlier said the government had given an indication of a resolution to the impasse. We are ready to discuss electoral reforms. Sources said that 10 hours were devoted to discussing the 150-year-old song of Vande Mataram in the BAC meeting. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to kick off the discussion on the 150th anniversary of the national song. Ten hours were also allocated to discussions on electoral reforms, they said. Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal is expected to respond to the controversy on Wednesday. The winter session of Parliament began on Monday and the Lok Sabha witnessed three adjournments following the opposition’s SIR demand. The opposition made its demand on Tuesday, leading to postponements. The parliament was adjourned first to 12 noon, then to 14.00 and then for that day.
At the floor leaders meeting, it was decided that the Lok Sabha will be conducted smoothly without any disruption from Wednesday. Opposition parties in Rajya Sabha went on strike demanding urgent discussion on SIR. The monsoon session of Parliament was almost canceled due to the Opposition’s demand for debate on SIR.
