Gordie Howe Bridge | Canada will ultimately not celebrate the inauguration with the United States

(Ottawa) The federal government has announced that due to the latest tariff threats from US President Donald Trump, Canada will not celebrate the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge with the United States.

A statement from the office of Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson said it would be “inappropriate” to continue the cross-border event planned for Friday.

A celebration reserved for Canadians will take place on Friday and the opening of the bridge is still planned for next Monday.

Sources close to the event, speaking on condition of anonymity, say the decision was made earlier Tuesday and participants were notified in the afternoon.

Donald Trump indicated Monday that he would impose 50% customs duties on a series of Canadian products within 30 days.

The opening of the bridge had already been postponed after the Trump administration sought to renegotiate the bridge construction deal due to reluctance from the Moroun family, billionaire owners of the competing Ambassador Bridge and a major donor to the Republican Party.
