Tragedy as body of UK tourist found in popular holiday hotspot | World | News

A British tourist was one of the five people killed in the tragedy at a popular holiday destination on Monday. Local authorities confirmed that five bodies were found in Chile’s Torres del Paine national park on Tuesday afternoon (November 18).
José Antonio Ruiz, Magallanes’ presidential delegate, confirmed that the people found were two Mexican citizens (one woman and one man), two German citizens (one woman and one man), and one British citizen and one woman. “We are in the process of evacuation and consular procedures of these people due to their nationality,” he said.
The delegate explained that arrangements were being made for the evacuation of the bodies by air. The operation will depend on weather conditions to ensure the Air Force helicopter can safely perform the mission.
He stated that for those who do not know the national park, it is a very large area in hectares and that it is very difficult to reach it by car or truck.
The official emphasized that the decision to close the Paine massif was taken specifically for the area where access to the National Park is located.
Located in Chile’s Magallanes Region, approximately 112 kilometers north of Puerto Natales, Torres del Paine National Park is celebrated as one of the country’s most iconic destinations.
Established in 1959, the park spans 181,414 hectares (448,280 acres) and showcases the dramatic landscapes of southern Patagonia, including mountains, glaciers, lakes and rivers. At its center is the Cordillera del Paine, a striking mountain range dominated by granite spiers known as the Torres del Paine, which gives the park its name and worldwide recognition.
