Met Office warns 10 areas face power cuts as 50mph winds to batter UK | Weather | News

The yellow weather warning covers London and South East England, as well as South West England, from the early hours of Saturday morning until the evening of Saturday 6 June. The Met Office announced the warning at 03:02 on Saturday.

According to the Met Office, strong winds are expected to hit affected areas at around 9am on Saturday morning, and these strong winds are expected to continue affecting the UK until 7pm this evening.

One Met Office forecast said: “Following wet and windy conditions overnight, strong south-westerly winds are expected to arrive in west Cornwall for a second time on Saturday morning.

“These will move steadily eastwards over Cornwall, the English Channel coastal areas and the Isle of Wight, reaching Sussex in the afternoon. Winds will then begin to ease from the west. Winds of 45-50mph are likely to hit the coast and Cornwall more generally, and may reach speeds of 55mph in a few clear spots.”

“Some disruption to weekend activities and events is possible, as well as the risk of power outages and low-level disruption to travel.”

The Met Office has warned that coastal roads, sea fronts and coastal communities are likely to be damaged by large waves, while delays to road, rail, air and ferry services remain a distinct possibility. The weather service also warned that short-term disruptions to power supplies and other services were possible.
