Halt To Iran Attacks Means Netanyahu’s Corruption Trial Will Resume On Sunday

JERUSALEM, April 9 (Reuters) – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s long-standing plan corruption case The trial will continue on Sunday, a spokesman said Thursday, just hours after Israel lifted a state of emergency imposed over its war with Iran.

Iran began targeting Israel with ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles after Israel and US President Donald Trump launched air strikes on Iran on February 28 to prevent Iran from sending forces abroad, end its nuclear program, and encourage the overthrow of its rulers.

The emergency, which had closed schools and businesses, was lifted on Wednesday evening after no Iranian missiles were reported since 3am (midnight GMT) after the ceasefire was agreed to. Israel’s extensive attacks on Lebanon due to the presence of Iran-backed Hezbollah have since endangered the ceasefire.

In the statement made by Israeli courts, it was said, “With the lifting of the state of emergency and the restart of the judicial system, the hearings will continue as usual,” and it was stated that the hearings will be held between Sunday and Wednesday.

Netanyahu, the first Israeli prime minister to be accused of a crime, denies the charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust, which were brought in 2019 after years of investigations. His trial, which started in 2020 and could lead to a prison sentence, has been postponed repeatedly with no end date in sight due to his official commitments.

Embers echoed Call from Netanyahu to Israeli President Isaac Herzog amnestyreferring to the impact of regular court appearances on his ability to perform his duties.

Herzog’s office said the justice department’s pardon department will collect comments to present to the president’s legal counsel, who will formulate a recommendation according to standard practice. Pardons are not usually granted mid-trial.

The accusations against Netanyahu and Hamas’ attacks on Israel in October 2023 damaged his reputation. Israel must wait elections Netanyahu’s coalition, the most right-wing coalition in Israeli history, is likely to lose in October.
