South Sudan VP faces treason charge over militia attack

Justice Minister Riek Machar, the first vice president of South Sudan, said he was accused of murder, betrayal and crimes against humanity, allegedly participating in the attacks of an ethnic militias against federal forces in March.

The charges against Machar faced the country’s two main political camps – the other, led by President Salva Kiir – in the 2013-2018 civil war, where 400,000 people died.

Machar has been under house arrest since March in connection with the attacks of the white army militias in the Northeast town Nasir.

International forces have repeatedly asked for the release of Machar and said that their detention could return the country to the civil war.

“Evidence also reveals that the white army’s white army from the Sudan Army (SPLM/A-IO) operates under the command and influence of some leaders of the White Army.”

“While the government of the Republic of South Sudan appreciates the participation of international partners, public and media in the Nasir incident, this issue is now the lower judgment.”

Kiir re -appointed Machar to the post of the first vice president as part of a peace agreement that ended the Civil War, but his partnership remained permanent and irregular violence between the two sides continued.

In addition to Machar, 20 more people were blamed in the case, including former Oil Minister Puot Kang Chol.

Geng said 13 of those accused were great.

An activist group from a South Sudan said that he would try the Hungarian and be fair to seven people and “Kangaroo, not a competent court, not a competent court,” he said that the court would be fair.
