New Delhi: The extraordinary performance of India’s indigenous BrahMos supersonic cruise missile during Operation Sindoor created waves in the global defense community. The missile’s precision and devastating attacks on Pakistani military and terrorist installations attracted the attention of countries eager to increase their own air defense capabilities. Among them, Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim country, is now emerging as a major potential buyer.
Indonesian Defense Minister Sajfry Sajmasoeddin arrived in India on a two-day visit on July 26 to attend the third India-Indonesia Defense Ministers Dialogue. Officials say the visit strengthens the forward prospects of the BrahMos agreement.
Agreement Reaches Advanced Stage

According to the Economic Times, discussions between India and Indonesia regarding the BrahMos agreement are already at an advanced stage. Sources state that Russia, which is the joint developer of the BrahMos missile with India, also supports the sale.
Defense Cooperation
India is also helping Indonesia build Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facilities to support the Air Force and Navy, leveraging India’s existing experience with platforms such as the Sukhoi fighter jet.
Considered a close aide of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Sajmasoeddin was instrumental in strengthening defense ties between Jakarta and New Delhi, especially given Subianto’s strategic focus on the Indian Ocean region.
India Helps Indonesia in Defense Modernization
During President Subianto’s visit to India in January, he met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the acquisition of BrahMos was high on the agenda. During this year’s Republic Day celebrations, the Indonesian President as the chief guest praised India’s growing defense prowess and strongly advocated for expansion of bilateral cooperation in the sector.
India, on the other hand, used its expertise to guarantee full support for Indonesia’s defense modernization plans.
Interest from Indonesia’s Top Leaders
The Indonesian Navy also played a direct role in investigating the deal. During President Subianto’s visit, a high-level delegation led by Chief of Staff Admiral Muhammad Ali toured the BrahMos manufacturing facility and met with its CEO Jayateerth R. Joshi.
The delegation that saw the missile first-hand was highly impressed, and the Indonesian President has since expressed keen interest in purchasing the system.
The Indonesian defense minister’s visit to New Delhi is expected to further solidify this strategic partnership, potentially becoming a major milestone in India’s defense exports while strengthening maritime and regional security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific.
