D-Calif. Gov. Gavin Newsom has been vague about whether he believes he and former Vice President Kamala Harris could face each other in the 2028 presidential primary.
On Sunday on “State of the Union,” CNN’s Dana Bash asked Newsom, while promoting his upcoming memoir “Young Man in a Hurry,” about his relationship with Harris, whose political career also began in California.
Bash noted that Newsom wrote about his “parallel careers” and wondered how those careers could potentially “intersect and collide.”

“Well, I’m in San Francisco now,” Newsom joked. “HE [Los Angeles] So we… there’s some distance between the two of us.”
“I’m talking about the whole country running for president in 2028,” Bash said.
“This… will be determined by fate. And I have never stood in the way of his ambition. I haven’t. And I don’t think I will in the future,” Newsom said.
He added: “You can only control what you can control. I think this whole book is that fundamental lesson, and the idea of controlling what you control and taking responsibility for what you control is a big part of what I’m trying to get across in this book.”

Both Harris and Newsom are considered potential candidates for the 2028 Democratic presidential primary and have fueled speculation about the presidential campaign in recent months. However, neither of them has officially announced their intention to run.
A University of New Hampshire Research Center poll released Thursday found that former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg He was at the top of the list of potential 2028 Democratic presidential candidates.
