Sir Creek: Timeline of the India-Pakistan dispute over a 96-km long creek
Story so far: “Any aggression in Pakistan’s Sir Creek region will be greeted with a echoed response that will change both history and geography,” he warned Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on October 2, 2025. Dispute since 1914.
Since the two countries have started the Sindoor operation in May 2025, Pakistan and Pakistan have been recalled by maritime strategies since they hit terror and military areas within the occupied Kashmir (POK). Experts focus on strategically important Sir Creek, as Pakistan believes that Pakistan has a ‘perceived military advantage in that region.
The place and importance of Sir Creek
Initially known as ‘Ban Ganga’, the 96 km stream was called ‘Sir Creek’ after a British representative in the colonial years, which flowed into the Arab Sea, separating Kutch Rann from the Sindh province on the southwest border on the western border of Gujarat. The swamps in Sir Creek are the largest fishing areas in Asia and are home to unused oil, minerals, oil and gas reserves. In addition to the economic and strategic importance of the creek, the water body is ecologically sensitive. India and Pakistan claimed the regional sea, exclusive economic region and continental shelf in the creek.
Dispute on Sir Creek
History
During the British Raj, Box Rann Sind fell into the first state of Kutch, while directly under the presidency of Bombay under the British administration. In 1908, Kutch Darbar and Sind administration put allegations of discussion in a small sector in the western part of Rann. However, the disagreement was resolved by the British administration after a decision on 24 February 1914 set the boundaries between the two provinces on February 24, 1914.
The decision, depicted with a green line on a British -approved map, gave Kutch Darbar and all Kori Creek sitting at the Sind Bombay Presidency to the west of Sir Creek. While Kutch became a part of India after the episode, the state of Sindh fell under Pakistan. This has now reigned the border issue between the two sovereigns – it made it an international dispute from an inter -state issue under the British Raj.
Pakistan claims that the boundaries between Kutch and Sindh are on the eastern bank of Sir Creek, that is, as stated in paragraph 9 of the resolution, that Sir Creek is the green line that ties the mouth and top. In Paragraph 10, however, India claims that the adopted line has announced that the line has joined Sindh from the top of Sir Creek in the east. In addition, as Sir Creek changes the route over time, he states that the western border should be taken as the ‘center of the traveling channel of Sir Creek’. India claims that this has made the river course into the boundary between Sindh and Kutch.
Interviews and dispute resolution
In 1956, the Prime Minister of India and Pakistan agreed to entrust the border to the central surveys of India and Pakistan as the highest priority issue of the entire western border. However, the survey was never done. After the 1965 War of India-Pakistan, both countries agreed to establish an UN court for the final determination of the border between Kutch and Sindh.
The court was given on 19 February 1968 90% of the controversial region 10% of the region, including Kutch’s India, to India, to the Rahim Ki Bazar, Dhara Banni and Chhad Bet, were given to Pakistan. “The resolution of 1914 divided the controversial area along Sir Creek with a new line from the top to the top, and then followed the blue dotted line from the east to the sind border marked with purple.”
Discarding Pakistan’s Claim of Half and Half Division of Rann Of Kutch, The Un Tribunal Ruled, “No Principle of A Half and Half Division of the Rann Was Proved Ever to Have Exided and 1914 Resolution Do Mention SUCH A Principle. Was Meant to be a Boundary Between Sind and the Rann as an Entity About Who There The Dispute Between The Two Neightbours, Is Also.
However, the Court could not solve the Sir Creek dispute: “This agreement excludes the issues offered in the blue dotted line in Sir Creek and a part of the border along the border.”
India-Pakistan ties that emerged after the Kargil War in 1999. Months after the war, the Pakistani Navy’s Breguet Atlantic Maritime Patrol Aircraft was hit by Kutch’s ran after invading the instructions to descend to an Indian base by the Mig-21 of the Indian Air Force. The Atlantic had maneuver to escape from Mig pilots, and he was shot from an air looking for heat to the air.
Various initiatives to solve the Sir Creek problem failed in the last attempt in 2007 for years. In January 2007, a joint hydrographic research was conducted and soon after a map exchange was held. However, the conflict was not solved
