Garbutt, Townsville: Car stolen with baby inside in brazen daylight theft

Police are investigating after a car was stolen from a driveway in northern Queensland with a baby inside.

The incident unfolded at Garbutt in Townsville on Monday afternoon when unidentified criminals drove off in a black Isuzu D-Max and abandoned the child a short distance away.

Queensland Police said the vehicle was parked in a driveway on Sunderland Avenue at about 1.44pm, with a woman and a baby secure in a car seat.

“The unknown criminals got into the vehicle and drove away before the car came to a further stop on Sunderland Street,” a police spokesman said.

“The criminals placed the baby in her car seat on the sidewalk before fleeing again.”

While police confirmed no one was physically injured during the incident, paramedics evaluated the baby as a precaution.

“Police arrived a short time later and conducted patrols but were unable to locate the vehicle,” police said.

Investigators are asking for the public’s help as they continue their investigation into the incident.

“Investigators are appealing for anyone who sees or saw the black Isuzu D-Max, with Queensland registration 840A4B, to contact police,” the spokesman said.

Investigations continue.
