Cat starts kitchen fire by jumping up and turning on stove in Texas home

A cat started a fire that severely damaged a kitchen in Dallas County, Texas, this week after managing to turn on the stove, authorities said.
The Garland Fire Department responded to the fire on Wednesday and immediately extinguished it, the department said in a statement.
Investigators later found home security video that showed a cat jumping on a stove with items on it and turning it on, igniting the fire.

In the video, the cat can be seen quickly jumping off the stove after turning it on and then setting the items on top on fire.
In the photo taken after the fire, it was seen that the fire spread to other devices, the kitchen door and the ceiling before the firefighters could extinguish the fire.

There was no damage to the rest of the house.
The ministry reminded citizens to keep flammable materials such as paper towels or plastic containers away from stoves, always turn off stoves and ovens, never leave cooking unattended and keep the area clutter-free.

The use of safety stove knob covers was also recommended.
“Even when a stove or stove is not actively in use, residual heat or accidental activation can quickly ignite nearby flammable materials. A few seconds of prevention can stop a fire from starting,” the department said in a statement.
