Yale Daily News columnist Ari Shtein faces Manhattan subway sex crime charges

An 18-year-old Yale student has been charged in connection with allegedly sexually assaulting a woman on a Manhattan subway train last month, but his lawyer said the accusation was false.

The New York City Police Department told Fox News Digital that Ari Shtein, of Washington, D.C., was arrested on July 8.

Court records reviewed by Fox News Digital show he faces four charges including first-degree sexual abuse, third-degree aggravated sexual abuse, forcible touching on a bus or train, third-degree sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child.

The NYPD said the charges stem from an incident reported around 3 p.m. June 28 on a northbound R train approaching West 28th Street and the Broadway subway station in Manhattan.

Police said a 30-year-old woman reported being sexually assaulted while boarding the train. The suspect remained on the train while he exited the station and was transported via emergency room to a local hospital for treatment.

Court records show Shtein pleaded not guilty at his arraignment before Judge Ilona B. Coleman and was released on his own recognizance. He is scheduled to return to New York Criminal Court on August 26.

Shtein’s attorney, Priya Chaudhry, denied the allegations in a statement to Fox News Digital.

“Every strap-on encountered unstable people in the metro. Unfortunately, when Ari visited our City, it was his turn,” Chaudhry said.

“Ari did not attack anyone. While he was visiting bookstores with a friend, his life was turned upside down by a woman who falsely accused him of a vile crime,” the statement said. The statement was included. “His reputation was destroyed. He was labeled a creep and convicted in the court of public opinion, without a single piece of evidence being made public.”

Chaudhry also countered the allegations with concrete reasons.

“The allegation is nonsense. According to the woman’s own account, she would have to have been wearing a swimsuit for the alleged behavior to be physically possible,” he said. “The subway car was full. If you were on that train and witnessed this woman’s behavior, please contact my firm.”

Shtein is listed as a staff columnist at the Yale Daily News opinion desk, where his last column appeared in May.

After Shtein was arrested on sexual abuse charges, Yale Daily News He announced that he was suspending himself from the broadcast indefinitely.

“We have seen disturbing reports of his arrest,” Yale Daily News Editor-in-Chief Asher Boiskin said in a statement posted on the newspaper’s website. he said. “We have made the decision to suspend Mr. Shtein from the newspaper indefinitely, pending the outcome of the legal process.”

In an October 2025 post on Substack titled “Mistakes Were Made,” Shtein criticized mandatory campus sexual assault training, arguing that such programs are largely ineffective and citing research he said showed they had little effect in preventing sexual violence.

Fox News Digital has reached out to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and the Yale Daily News for comment.
