China’s warning to US, Taiwan? Beijing launches ‘Justice Mission 2025’ military drills begin after sanctions

China has launched ‘Justice Mission 2025’, a large-scale military exercise involving air, sea and missile forces around Taiwan. The drills took place after the $11.1 billion arms sale to Taiwan. Beijing calls it a warning against independence and foreign intervention.

China announced a large-scale military exercise around Taiwan on Monday, signaling its firm stance on the island, which Beijing claims is part of its sovereign territory. According to a spokesman for the PLA Eastern Theater Command, the operation called ‘Justice Mission 2025’ involves coordinated maneuvers by the Chinese army, navy, air force, missile units and other branches of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA).

Senior Colonel Shi Yi explained that the exercises included air and sea patrols, simulated attacks on enemy targets, blockades of strategic ports, and deterrence operations along key areas surrounding the battlefield. The exercises are intended to test joint combat capabilities across multiple military branches, rapid deployment and operational control across all domains.

Show of Power and Strategic Messaging

Shi Yi described the exercises as a direct warning to ‘Taiwan independence’ forces and foreign intervention in the Taiwan issue, arguing that they were necessary to protect China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. PLA aircraft and navy ships conduct operations from various directions, while simulated joint attacks are conducted to assess troop coordination and precision targeting. Eastern Theater Command also published a themed poster titled ‘Shield of Justice, Shattering Illusion’ regarding the exercise.

The maneuvers include fighter jets, bombers, unmanned aerial vehicles and long-range rocket systems and target mobile ground assets and critical strategic targets in the center of the Taiwan Strait.

Context: US Arms Sales to Taiwan

The exercises took place shortly after the US administration under former President Donald Trump approved an $11.1 billion arms package for Taiwan on December 18. The proposed deal includes medium-range missiles, howitzers, unmanned aerial vehicles and HIMARS rocket systems. China condemned the sale, saying it violated the one-China principle and Sino-US agreements and interfered with China’s internal affairs.

In response, China announced sanctions against 20 US defense companies and 10 senior executives involved in supplying arms to Taiwan, citing the Anti-Alien Sanctions Act.

Taiwan Condemns Exercises

Taiwan criticized China’s drills as an ‘irrational provocation’ that threatens regional stability. The island’s Ministry of National Defense confirmed that Rapid Response Exercises had been activated and forces were on high alert to protect the area and citizens.

Ongoing exercises and increased rhetoric highlight rising cross-strait tensions, with both sides demonstrating military readiness in the face of ongoing geopolitical disputes and international interventions.
