5 things you need to know as Prime Minister in a crisis
- Sir Keir Starmer is fighting to stay in 10 Downing Street in the face of growing demands from within the Labor Party for his resignation over the Lord Mandelson scandal. The Prime Minister is facing intense pressure after his top aide resigned this morning before his communications chief stepped down.
- Scottish Labor leader Anas Sarwar called on Sir Keir to stand down at a hastily arranged press conference this afternoon, which the Conservatives branded “one of the final nails in Starmer’s political coffin”. Mr Sarwar declared that “the distraction must end and the leadership at Downing Street must change” as he voiced fears about the Scottish Parliament elections in May.
- However, after Prime Minister Sarwar’s call for resignation, the entire cabinet showed support for him. Ministers shared a series of coordinated posts on social media as Sir Keir went about his business.
- While the Prime Minister was holed up in Number 10, UK Reform leader Nigel Farage was addressing 2,000 Reform supporters at a rally in Birmingham. The Clacton MP has declared his rebel party is now “on a general election fighting footing”. And in a brutal attack, he said the political life of “the most unpopular and most useless prime minister in living memory is nearing its end”.
- The Prime Minister emerged from 10 Downing Street just before 6pm to address a packed meeting of Labor MPs in Parliament that lasted more than an hour. He told them that he had “won every fight I’ve ever been in” and that he was “not ready to go” and called on his party to unite in the fight against the Reformation.
