Cuba is preparing for the “possibility of military attack”, a senior official warned on Sunday, as President Donald Trump began “seizing” control of the island nation after a series of bold foreign policy moves.
Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernández de Cossío said in a statement to NBC’s “Meet the Press” program: “Our army is always prepared, and in fact these days it is also preparing for the possibility of a military attack.” he said.
He continued, “If we didn’t do this, we would be naive looking at what’s going on in the world. But we really hope it doesn’t happen… and we can’t find any justification.” [for it] whatever happens.”

When asked to elaborate on how the country is preparing for the possibility of conflict, Fernández de Cossío told NBC’s Kristen Welker that the country “has historically been prepared to act” but did not offer further information.
Trump told Fox News’ Peter Doocy last week that he believes he will soon have “the honor” of “somehow taking over Cuba.”

Fernández de Cossío similarly reiterated Cuba’s sovereignty and emphasized that the island nation refused to become a state of any other country or superpower.
When asked whether the United States’ action would result in a military conflict, Fernández de Cossío emphasized Cuba’s desire to avoid conflict at all costs.
“We really hope there won’t be any military action, and frankly we don’t see any reason; we don’t see any justification for military action against Cuba,” he said. “Cuba is a peaceful country. We are not enemies of the USA, we do not pose any threat to the USA. In fact, we have said this openly, we want to establish a friendly and respectful relationship with the USA…”
