The Toronto Star published an opinion piece Tuesday questioning whether Ontario Premier Doug Ford should be worried about President Donald Trump capturing and detaining him in Canada following the latest U.S. military strikes on Venezuela.
Over the weekend, Trump announced military strikes in Caracas that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife. The latest actions have drawn renewed attention to Trump’s initial move early in his administration to acquire other countries such as Greenland.
Considering Trump’s public interest in acquiring Canada as the “51st state” Toronto Star Columnist Vinay Menon questioned whether Ford should have prudently “stepped up safety.”

“This is why I worry about our prime minister,” Menon wrote. “Whether threatening to halt energy exports in response to tariffs or running anti-Trump ads featuring Ronald Reagan’s speech, no Canadian politician comes closer to the skin of Agent Orange than Mr. Ford. The situation in Venezuela should be a wake-up call for us all.”
Although he initially supported Trump in his first term, Ford has since become more critical of Trump’s policies, such as imposing tariffs on Canada. By 2025, Ford approved an ad criticizing Trump’s tariff strategy, which reportedly led to the end of trade talks between the United States and Canada.

Ford himself rejected the idea that Trump was a threat to Canada after the Venezuela operation. Addressing the press on Monday.

“This isn’t going to scare me. It shouldn’t scare anyone in Canada,” Ford said.
He added: “I’m not going to worry about President Trump. I’m going to worry about what we can do, how we can diversify our trade around the world and start shipping more of our goods, products and energy.”

But Menon warned that Trump is in “a state of war” and Canada could be on that path, too.
Menon concluded his thoughts: “Doug Ford needs to be careful going in and out of Queen’s Park this year. America is in the mood for a hostile takeover, and we’re in the thick of it.”
