‘Expanding opportunities’: Tata Steel to include female staff in all three shifts at Jamshedpur plant

Tata Steel on Wednesday announced a major expansion in its gender diversity initiatives, stating that the company will employ women employees in all three shifts at its Jamshedpur plant.
The company’s path-breaking initiative, called ‘Udaan: Wings of Change’, will see an estimated 543 women employees from 21 departments working in three shifts. PTI reported.
Tata Steel Jamshedpur is the flagship facility of the Tata Steel group, which is among the leading global steel companies with worldwide operations and business presence.
Phased implementation and scale
The company stated that the recruitment of female staff at the Jamshedpur facility started on Tuesday, October 14 and will be carried out in phases, with the full transition expected to be completed by February 1 next year.
“The significant expansion of its path-breaking initiative ‘Udaan: Wings of Change’ witnessed the deployment of women in all three shifts on Tuesday,” the company said.
What is the purpose of the initiative?
This strategic decision reflects Tata Steel’s commitment to promoting greater gender diversity, equity and inclusion in its workforce, which is in line with its broader DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) objectives. PTI reported.
This move follows recent regulatory approvals given by the government, which enable Tata Steel to create a more inclusive working environment, the company said in a statement.
“The ‘Udaan: Wings of Change’ initiative is a testament to Tata Steel’s deep-rooted commitment to empowering women and fostering a truly inclusive workplace,” said Atrayee Sanyal, the company’s Chief People Officer.
“By ensuring the participation of female employees in three-shift operations, we not only expand opportunities, but also strengthen our organizational structure with different perspectives and talents,” he added.
The company emphasized that they have meticulously planned a comprehensive support system to ensure the success of the initiative. This system is designed to ensure the safety, security, welfare and professional development of female employees while working on the extended shift system.
Tata Steel’s business growth
Tata Steel on Thursday also released its crude steel production report in India, which rose 7% to 5.67 million tonnes in the second quarter of the current financial year. This growth was mainly due to normalization of operations following completion of relining of a blast furnace at Jamshedpur in Jharkhand.
The company said it continues to strengthen its product portfolio with new facilities and customer approvals. The recently commissioned continuous galvanizing line at Kalinganagar in Odisha has already received plant approvals from original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). PTI reported.
