The final start of a wild 2025 season that began in Single-A ball with Trey Yesavage making his second World Series appearance for the Toronto Blue Jays ends with a momentous masterpiece.

The 22-year-old Yesavage, who has finally built his wall through the Blue Jays’ minor league system to solidify himself as a key member of this postseason run, delivered a seven-inning masterclass on the mound at Dodger Stadium to help Toronto beat Los Angeles 6-1 in Game 5 of the World Series.

Thanks to Yesavage’s efforts and some more timely hitting from the Blue Jays lineup, Toronto heads back north with just one win needed to win the World Series.

Yesavage struck out 12 of the Dodgers’ hitters and allowed only three hits and one earned run in a 104-pitch performance, with 10 of those hits coming in the first five innings of the contest.

The only person in MLB history to do this? Dodgers legend Sandy Koufax was watching Game 5 at Dodger Stadium, right behind the home plate.

In Game 1, Yesavage lacked the ability to pitch with his sharp dropping splitter, forcing him to use his slider more often than he was used to. As a result, the Dodgers touched it, but the Blue Jays’ own offensive attack resulted in a Game 1 victory at home.

This time, Yesavage made perfect contact on the pitch, and the Dodgers, like the New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners before them this postseason, couldn’t figure it out. Additionally, the slider was highly complementary to his mid-90s fastball keeping hitters honest.

It also helped Yesavage get some quick insurance on the scoreboard, as opponent Blake Snell allowed two solo home runs in the first three pitches of the game.

First up was Davis Schneider, who took the first pitch he saw over the fence to immediately set the tone for Toronto. Then, Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s postseason dream continued, hitting his eighth home run this October in a crucial Game 5 to make the score 2-0 in favor of the away team.

By the end of the third quarter, Yesavage’s only blemish on the game was a 2-0 pass by Enrique Hernandez, who didn’t shy away from a splitter in the zone. He turned and parked it as the baseball flew over the left field fence and re-energized the Dodger Stadium crowd, which had been lackluster since Guerrero’s homer.

But that didn’t last long as the Blue Jays responded in the next frame. Teoscar Hernandez overdubbed Daulton Varsho’s hit to right field, and it cost him dearly as Varsho raced to third base. Ernie Clement would hit a sacrifice fly to score him and take back the two-run lead.

As Yesavage continued to advance, the Blue Jays extended the lead needed to take the win in the top of the seventh with Addison Barger scoring on a single and three wild pitches, while Bo Bichette singled home Andres Gimenez to make it 5-1. Isiah Kiner-Falefa’s single in the eighth added to the guarantee as Clement scored.

After Yesavage’s night was complete, Blue Jays manager John Schneider went to Seranthony Dominguez and went to Jeff Hoffman to close the door on Game 5, and that’s exactly what they did to give themselves two chances to clinch the franchise’s first World Series since 1993.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers, winners of last year’s World Series, have their backs against the wall. They will need to win the next two matches to defend their title and they will have the right man for that.
