Bangladesh quake toll rises to 10, hundreds injured

At least 10 people, including two children, died and more than 450 people were injured in the 5.5 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Bangladesh.

It was stated that the epicenter of the earthquake was Narsingdi district, approximately 30 kilometers away from the capital Dhaka. The US Geological Survey announced that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Dhaka-based DBC Television reported that two children were among the dead.

Friday’s earthquake, which lasted just a few seconds, caused buildings to shake and sent panicked residents onto the streets. Fire Brigade and Civil Defense emergency response department reported cracks in some buildings in Dhaka.

According to police officer Rafiqul Islam, four people died in the capital; Three of them died when the railings of an eight-story building fell on them.

In Gazipur, an industrial area north of the capital Dhaka, at least 400 people were injured, most of them garment workers, who rushed to escape factory buildings in panic during the earthquake, local officials said.

Tremors were also felt in eastern Indian states bordering Bangladesh, but there were no reports of major damage.

The earthquake caused Ireland’s cricket Test match in Bangladesh to be temporarily halted.

Earthquakes are common in northern and southeastern Bangladesh due to the interaction between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, according to the USGS.
