The youth, identified as Abhishek Das, was later arrested by the police and interrogated.
The accused, aged about 30, followed Mr. Mallick, who entered his home around 9 p.m., the official said. The teenager suddenly jumped on the former Minister and punched him in the lower abdomen, stunning Mr Mallick.

It was later known that the teenager was receiving psychiatric treatment at a state hospital in the city and had made several visits to Mr. Mallick’s home in Salt Lake earlier in the day, the police official said.
Mr Mallick told reporters he was under the impression that the teenager wanted to meet him like other visitors and was stunned when he suddenly lunged forward and struck him.
“I am not sure if he was in a drunken state or not. I have never seen him before. It is unthinkable that someone from Habra would attack me,” the ruling party MLA said. he said.
But he described the attack as a one-off incident.
Mr. Mallick was arrested by central agencies in connection with a corruption case nearly two years ago when he was the Forest Minister. The corruption case was related to his previous position as Minister of Food and Civil Supplies.
