Assembly Elections 2026 LIVE: ECI orders suspension of Hingalganj OC over ‘bias’ in West Bengal

BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari on Friday, April 24, 2026, alleged that a BJP worker was intimidated and threatened by ruling TMC supporters at his residence in South Kolkata and demanded immediate action from the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Mr. Adhikari, in a post on

“This is a blatant attempt to suppress the Opposition and terrorize women party workers who stand against this corrupt regime,” said Mr. Adhikari, Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly.

He attributed the incident to the high voter turnout of around 93% recorded in the first phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections on Thursday, April 23, 2026, and claimed that the ruling party was “scared” in the wake of what he called an “impending rout”. Mr. Adhikari, who is contesting from the high-profile Bhabanipur constituency where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee sits, said a complaint has been lodged at Kalighat police station and urged the ECI to “inform immediately” and take stringent action against the perpetrators.

Mr. Adhikari had won from Nandigram seat in the 2021 Assembly elections, defeating Ms. Banerjee. He later went to the Assembly after winning a by-poll in Bhabanipur. The BJP leader is contesting from Nandigram this time too.

“We will not sit back if the local police remain silent spectators to this hooliganism,” he warned, adding that TMC’s threats will not stop change. — PTI
