Tyrol: At least three people buried under horror avalanche | World | News

At least three people were buried under the snow after an avalanche occurred at a popular holiday spot. Emergency services are racing to save those buried after an avalanche occurred around 9.30am in the “Rote Piste 9” area near the Daunscharte section of the ski resort above Neustift im Stubaital.

While 2 people trapped underground were rescued, they were slightly injured. A major search and rescue operation involving multiple mountain rescue teams, several helicopters and search dogs is underway to rescue those still trapped on the Stubai Glacier in Tyrol. An intensive search is being carried out in the area to find other victims.

The number of people affected and the exact circumstances remain unclear. The slide is believed to have been triggered by skiers traveling outside marked pistes, according to Reinhard Klier, head of the Stubai Glacier lift.

“According to available information, the avalanche was triggered by off-piste skiers. The snow masses partially reached the bottom of the 9th runway, which was later closed,” Klier said.

According to local media Meinbezirk.at, many winter sports enthusiasts were on track 9 when the avalanche debris reached its bottom.

Authorities are investigating the incident and ski area operators have urged visitors to stay on designated slopes due to unstable snow conditions on off-piste terrain.
