Three killed in Moscow car explosion, say Russian authorities | Russia

Two traffic police officers and a third person were killed in a car explosion in Moscow, Russia’s Investigative Committee, which investigates major crimes, said early Wednesday.

The committee said in a statement that “an explosive device was triggered” when police officers approached a “suspicious person” near the police vehicle on Yeletskaya Street in the south of the capital.

Authorities said that the crime scene was established and security camera footage was reviewed.

Images broadcast on Russian television showed an area cordoned off and a large police presence. Eyewitnesses described an explosion that occurred around 1.30 local time.

Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, a top Russian general, was killed this week when a bomb exploded under his car in southern Moscow, according to Russian investigators. They described the death of the head of the Russian army’s general staff operational training directorate as a possible assassination carried out by Ukrainian intelligence services. Sarvarov’s car exploded while driving along Yaseneva Street around 7 a.m. on Monday.

Russian officials and prominent pro-war voices have called for swift revenge for the attack, the third bombing in Moscow last year to claim the life of a senior Russian officer linked to the invasion of Ukraine.
