How will weather this Thanksgiving compare to years past?
With the holiday fast approaching, it’s no secret that Thanksgiving is going to be a bit chilly this year. Our latest forecast calls for a partly cloudy, windy day with high temperatures in the mid to upper 40s.
Can we really complain about this? Some longtime New Englanders would probably say no…
HOTTEST
You have to go back a long way to find a truly warm Thanksgiving day, but it did happen. In 1941, the temperature in Boston reached 71 degrees! The holiday actually occurred on the 20th of this year, making it the earliest holiday the country celebrated; It was a very small advantage in terms of warming weather.
COLDEST
On the coldest Thanksgiving, not a single living soul was around. This happened in 1873, just one year after official weather records were kept in Boston! The mercury dropped to just 11 degrees today.
But more recently the coldest HIGH temperature was seen. Many may remember that in 2018 the city’s temperature did not just rise above 24 degrees! Morning/night may not be as simple as it was in 1873, but the day is certainly different.
THE WETEST
The rainiest Thanksgiving in Boston was in 1971, but depending on where exactly you live in southern New England, A LOT different memory of the day. Boston only reached the lowest temperature of 34F; this was cold enough for only trace amounts of snow and 2.59 inches of rain.
However… this storm crushed the interior and brought heavy snowfall to the region. Worcester got 14.8 inches of SNOW on Thanksgiving! Even Hartford, CT was covered in just under eight inches of snow!
I hope everyone will make their travels early this year…
MOST PROFITABLE
Boston may have missed the opportunity in 1971, but they DID NOT miss it eighteen years later in 1989. While it wasn’t the biggest storm the city has ever seen, it dumped a solid 4.4 inches of snow on Thanksgiving. But the extent of this snowfall made the trip even worse, as Worcester also rose seven inches, and even Providence sank eight inches!
In the grand scheme of things, our weird New England weather is making for a holiday full of 40s, and some clouds sound pretty nice this time of year!
