CEC directs West Bengal officials to ensure zero post-poll violence

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, directed the West Bengal Chief Secretary, Director General of Police and the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) deployed in the state to ensure that everyone has zero tolerance for post-election violence.

Mr. Kumar directed the authorities concerned to immediately arrest those involved in post-election violence and vandalism in the state.
Three people, including a close aide of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, have been killed in alleged post-election violence in the state since the results of the Assembly elections were declared on Monday, May 4, 2026.

“Those responsible for inciting violence and committing acts of vandalism should be arrested immediately,” said a senior official, citing the CEC’s instructions.
He added that state authorities have intensified vigil across districts with coordinated efforts between police and central forces to prevent any untoward incident.

ECI sources said the CEC also directed officials to hold joint press conferences in all districts to convey the message of zero tolerance for violence.
West Bengal Assembly elections were held in two phases on 23 and 29 April. The counting of votes took place on May 4 and the BJP emerged victorious with 207 seats in the 294-member assembly. The incumbent Trinamool Congress won 80 seats.
