A former SSLC rank holder announces this year’s results

General Education Principal Secretary Sharmila Mary Joseph, who announced the SSLC results on Friday, is herself in the SSLC rankings.

Ms. Joseph ranked third in 1986 with 580 points. As a student of the school of the Convent of the Holy Angels in the capital, he worked hard and excelled in his studies. “The competition in our school was tight. Students were reaching the top every year. Many of us aspired to reach the top,” he said.

In 1986, the girls took the top three places, with Ms. Joseph sharing third place with a male student. That period was also when the pass percentage was 46.73%; Unlike now when the pass percentage exceeded 99%. “There was also exam pressure. SSLC exams were held on consecutive days, in the morning and afternoon. There was no gap between exams like there is now.”

Asked if she wanted the ranking system to return, Ms Joseph said the change in grades was based on several studies highlighting the extreme pressure the race to achieve ranks places on students. In the case of grading, he noted that grading was thought to put an end to comparisons between students and labeling them.

After school, Ms. Joseph went on to complete her MBBS. He was pursuing MD when he took the Civil Services exam.

Ms Joseph, for whom the announcement was unexpected, expressed her satisfaction with the delivery of the SSLC results. He encouraged his students to set ambitious goals and dedicate themselves to their studies to seize upcoming opportunities.
