Alexander Isak: Liverpool fear ‘significant’ lower leg injury for striker

Isak, who scored only his second Premier League goal of the season in 10 appearances on Saturday, has struggled since arriving at Anfield.

Earlier this summer he was left out of Newcastle’s squad for the pre-season tour of Asia due to what the club described as a “minor thigh injury”, but it is understood he wants to try for a move.

Isak trained alone at his former club Real Sociedad before joining Liverpool on deadline day.

Because he did not have a proper pre-season period, he was unable to achieve match fitness and started only 10 times in all competitions.

Liverpool are also without Mohamed Salah, who played for Egypt in the Africa Cup of Nations, and Cody Gakpo, who was injured.

Fellow striker Hugo Ekitike, who joined the team from Eintracht Frankfurt in the summer, was also a target at Spurs and was expected to continue leading the charge for the Reds.

The 23-year-old Frenchman has scored 11 goals this term, five of them in the last three league games, with Isak starting on the bench.
