Wong did not confirm reports that more Iranian women football players are seeking asylum
The government remains silent on reports that two more women from the Iranian football team have sought asylum in Australia.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Penny WongHe’s been making the media rounds this morning, telling the Today Show he’ll leave any developments to the home secretary. Tony Burke, He will hold a press conference later this morning.
Wong said the women were given the opportunity to speak to department officials alone, without their ministers present. He says the footage of the rest of the Iran team getting on and off the bus was “very confronting.”
Asked if he is concerned about their welfare and what will happen to those who return to Iran, Wong says:
I hesitate to increase speculation about the reaction when they return home because, frankly, we are concerned for their safety. We know that this regime has brutally treated women and girls, not its own citizens, and we’ve seen that over the years, which is why the government has gone to such lengths to ensure that people are given the right to choose, and as I said, they’ve been presented with an opportunity, and I should say they’ve had the opportunity to speak to Australian officials alone.
Government reassures Australia’s fuel supply is ‘excessive’
Labor is facing pressure from the opposition over fuel shortages and panic buying felt across the country as it tries to reassure the public there is adequate supply.
housing minister, Clare O’Neil, and the shadow attorney general, Michaelia CashWe were discussing this morning on Sunrise.
O’Neil said Australians needed to feel safe and once again (for the billionth time) told everyone to stop panic buying.
We have a fuel surplus in the country that exceeds legal requirements. The reason we see problems [across the] Because people buy more fuel than they need. We manage this on a daily basis and people need to have confidence in our fuel security system as a country and buy what they need.
We will solve these problems with gas stations across the country.
Cash said blaming families and farmers for the shortage was not good enough and the government needed to do more to address supply shortfalls.
It’s everyone’s fault. Let’s blame mom and dad Australia, come on [blame] farmers. Let’s blame small businesses, let’s blame truckers. What if the government actually started governing?

Naplan tests will start today

Caitlin Cassidy
Today around 1.4 million students will sit Naplan exams, the annual national assessment loved by statisticians and hated by many education experts.
Naplan measures how students in grades 3, 5, 6 and 9 are progressing in literacy and numeracy; This year marks the second phase since the test was moved from May to March with new proficiency levels.
Chairman of the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (Adjara), Stephen GnielHe said his organization was working with the Islamic Schools Association of Australia to help schools and teachers support affected students as the testing period coincided with Ramadan.
To ensure fasting students have peak energy levels, we encourage schools to schedule their tests as soon as possible within the testing window and conduct Naplan tests first thing in the morning.
Gniel assured students that there was no need to study for exams.
The best preparation children can make is to ensure that they attend school regularly… It’s about knowing how each student is doing.
Schools and education authorities will receive preliminary results early in term 2 and full results will be published in early August.

Two more Iranians seek asylum in Australia after football team escapes
Two more members of the Iranian women’s football team have reportedly sought asylum in Australia after competing in the Women’s Asian Cup tournament.
Local time, a plane with players and staff departed for Malaysia on Tuesday night from Sydney airport, according to multiple reports, bringing a dramatic end to two days when five players who refused to return home were granted asylum.
That number rose to seven on Tuesday night when two more members of the band decided to stay in Australia, according to various media outlets.
Reports said that the team departed for Kulala Lumpur from Sydney at 22.43 local time on Malaysia Airlines flight MH140, but it was unclear which route they would take to Iran after that because the country’s airspace was closed due to the conflict in the Middle East.
