Cold change forecast for New Year’s Eve after hot conditions
Melbourne’s turbulent summer season will continue into the new year as Monday’s warm conditions give way to a chilly New Year’s Eve.
Thousands of swimmers were drawn to Port Phillip Bay as the city hit a top temperature of 33 degrees on Monday, but Tuesday will be the last suitable day for beachgoers in 2025, with a predicted top temperature of 29 degrees.
Temperatures will then drop by around 10 degrees and are expected to reach a maximum of 19 degrees and a low of 13 degrees in Melbourne on Wednesday.
The Bureau of Meteorology’s Daniel Sherwin-Simpson said the minimum temperature in the CBD during the midnight fireworks display would be slightly higher, around 14 degrees.
The Mornington Peninsula and Geelong are looking to get even colder on New Year’s Eve, with the midnight low temperature likely to drop to 11 degrees, the meteorologist said.
“Overall Melbourne evenings will be a little milder,” Sherwin-Simpson said.
“However, we will be in a southerly air flow with winds likely to be southerly. [the] Speeds between 20 km/h and 30 km/h, so there may also be a light wind from the bay.
“We are not expecting a very cold night in terms of the CBD. But personally, if I were to go there [to the city]”At least I’d still be bringing a sweater.”
Some cloud cover on New Year’s Eve was not expected to impair the visibility of the fireworks display, and New Year’s Day was expected to be mild across the state.
The predicted high temperature in Melbourne on Thursday was just slightly below average at 24 degrees.
“[New Year’s Eve is] slightly colder than average. But today we are doing well and actually above average. So there are some fluctuations and intersections this time of year,” Sherwin-Simpson said.
“In general, what you get at Christmas will be what you get in the New Year [Eve].”
The meteorologist said Victorians in the Mallee and the state’s north could expect New Year’s Eve temperatures to be between 15 and 20 degrees.
Sherwin-Simpson said temperatures in Melbourne so far this summer were around the seasonal average.
More than 500,000 people are expected to celebrate New Year’s Eve this year in Melbourne’s CBD, where around 500 police officers will be deployed.
Monday was the sixth day this month that Melbourne exceeded 30 degrees.
The city recorded temperatures above 30 degrees for three consecutive days between 17 and 19 December; December 18 was the hottest day of the month with 38 degrees.
