Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 will premiere on Netflix in 2026. The trailer for the animated spin-off was announced in a teaser earlier this month.
Created by The Duffer Brothers in collaboration with Eric Robles, the series aims to re-imagine Hawkins through a nostalgic animation lens. Sharing the first teaser and concept art, Ross Duffer emphasized the creative freedom the team gained with animation: “There are truly no limits in animation… Eric and his team can go crazy… and they did.”

Why is the Stranger Things animated show being mocked online?
Despite the excitement surrounding the expansion of the Stranger Things universe, the teaser sparked polarized reactions, largely due to the 3D CGI animation style.
Considering the series’ title and themes, many fans were expecting a visual approach closer to the original ’80s cartoons. Instead, the use of modern CGI led to confusion and criticism on social media. “Why would you choose 3D animation when you want to evoke the feel of an 80s cartoon?” A YouTube user asked this question and it received more than 3,100 likes.
Another added: “Have the Duffer brothers ever seen an 80s cartoon?”
Others argued that the 3D style still fit the creators’ vision, with one reviewer stating: “It doesn’t have to look like an ’80s cartoon. They wanted the show as a whole to look like an ’80s cartoon.”
Some fans, including animators, defended this choice, saying that 3D animation offers more variety and creative possibilities. Yet for some of the audience, the change in style clashes with the promised retro tone.
