Adoor Gopalakrishnan justifies controversial remarks on film funding for SC/ST filmmakers: ‘My intention was…’

Dalit activist Dinu Veyil filed a complaint against the Museum Station and the SC/ST Commission Adoor Gopalakrishnan and accused the legendary filmmaker of insulting the entire backward community throughout his statements.
On Monday, Seçkin Film Producer and Dadasaheb Phalke Awardee Adoor Gopalakrishnan justified his statements of the Kerala government about the project to promote filmmakers from the marginal departments and said that their statements aimed to strengthen them and improve their technical knowledge. He said that women filmmakers and those belonging to SC/ST sections want to continue in the film industry, so he wanted to receive expert training on how to use in filmmaking and government financing.
Speaking to journalists in Thiruvananthapuram, Gazi said he was not responsible for the comments made by the media about his statements during the film Conclave organized by the government on Sunday. He emphasized that the films made with government financing should have social relevance, aesthetic beauty and technical excellence.
Gopalakrishnan, who stated the needs of the films to have information about the filmmaking, said that he wanted the marginal departments to be periodically updated by filmmakers and to receive appropriate orientation under experts. “Women’s filmmakers and those belonging to the SC/ST category should continue in the sector. He said.
He wanted to know what was inconvenient in his words from the media director of Swayamvaram media. “I saw some of the film producers in some films. I felt problems due to lack of orientation in their films. I especially mentioned these two directors categories because they were financed by the government.” He said.
In addition to strengthening them and giving them appropriate guidance, the authority added that such filmmakers should be orientation on how to use public funds. He also criticized the singer Pushpavati for interrupting his speech during Complave and said he had no connection with cinema. “Let them complain. They have the same rights.” He said.
In the early hours of the day, Dalit activist Dinu Veyil filed a complaint against Gopalakrishnan to the Museum Police and SC/ST Commission and accused him of insulting the entire backward community through his statements in Complave. Port Minister Vn Vasavan said that his words were misinterpreted and expanded the support of Gopalakrishnan, while the Minister of Higher Education R Bindhu rejected the words of the veteran and said that the government had the responsibility to provide justice to those rejected during these years.
Gopalakrishnan did not criticize the government’s attitude, Vas Vasavan added that he suggested to be careful when using funds in connection with the financing of filmmakers. However, Bindhu said that the government is not wrong to provide funds because they express their creativity to women and those who belong to the SC/ST community. Stating that film construction is an expensive process and that there is nothing wrong with the government to provide funding for it, the Minister said that this is one of the best projects of the cultural affairs department.
On Sunday, Gopalakrishnan said that the current application of Kerala State Film Development Company (KSFDC), which provides 1.5 Crore from marginal sections to potential filmmakers, did not produce the desired results. Authorized, enthusiastic filmmakers belonging to these sessions should be subject to appropriate training by experts before the distribution of such funds.
