He founded this party against DMK: Ne C.Ve. While announcing his support for TVK, Shanmugam said:

C.Ve. Shanmugam, in the role of SP Velumani, announced that a group of rebel MLAs led by them would support TVK. They also explained their reasons behind leaving Palaniswami’s leadership.

Shanmugam said, “We formed this party against the DMK. Our politics has been against the DMK for 53 years. Considering this history, the proposal to form an AIADMK government with the support of the DMK was put forward but the majority of our members rejected it and opposed it. If we formed an alliance with the DMK, the AIADMK would cease to exist. They did not accept such a scenario.”
