Keir Starmer has told Donald Trump he was wrong to threaten tariffs on NATO allies to secure Greenland as part of diplomatic appeals aimed at dealing with the crisis.
In addition to the US President, the British prime minister met on Sunday with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, whose territory includes Greenland, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and NATO secretary general Mark Rutte.
The summary of the call in Downing Street said: “The Prime Minister reiterated his position on Greenland in all his calls. He said security in the north was a priority for all NATO allies to protect Euro-Atlantic interests.” “He also said it was wrong to impose tariffs on allies to ensure the collective security of NATO allies.”
This tough stance could put Starmer on a collision course with the US after Trump said he would impose sanctions on eight European countries, including Britain, which deployed troops to Greenland in response to US threats against its future.
A joint statement by the affected countries on Sunday said Trump’s threats “undermine transatlantic relations and lead to a dangerous decline.”
