Country’s federalism needs ‘structural reset,’ says M K Stalin

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Wednesday proposed amendments to the Constitution to strengthen federalism and state autonomy at the Center and called for a “structural reset” of the country’s federalism.

Justice Kurian Joseph, presenting the first part of his committee’s report on centre-state relations in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, said federalism is about trust and autonomy.

Ruling DMK chief Stalin said, “Indian federalism needs a structural reset. We can amend the constitution again if we want. Meaningful federalism is not about control, but about trust, autonomy and governance that responds to people’s realities.”

In 1967, DMK founder and late CM CN Annadurai observed that the Union should indeed be strong enough to protect India’s sovereignty and integrity.

He recalled that his successor, the late M Karunanidhi, advanced this philosophy with the maxim of “Autonomy for the States and Federalism at the Centre” and set up the first independent committee on Union-State Relations in 1969 under the direction of Justice PV Rajamannar.

Stalin said DMK follows the policy of autonomy in the states and federalism at the centre.
