Murder investigation launched 35 years after man’s death in Swansea hospital

A 67-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering a pensioner nearly 35 years ago.

Bentley Mathias, 92, died at Morriston Hospital, Swansea, on 19 November 1991.

His death was not considered suspicious at that time, the cause was recorded as cerebral hemorrhage.

However, it now appears that potential new information has come to light.

Dyfed-Powys Police launched a murder investigation.

A spokesman said: “Dyfed-Powys Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 92-year-old man in 1991.

“On Wednesday 22 July 2026 officers arrested a 67-year-old man from the Llandewi Velfrey area of ​​Pembrokeshire on suspicion of murder.

“He has been released on bail while the police continue their investigation.

“After this arrest, the police are not looking for anyone else regarding the matter, the investigation continues.”
