An 18-year-old died after getting into trouble while swimming in the river at Darley Abbey. Five fire trucks and three water rescue units were dispatched shortly after 12:46 a.m. on Friday, July 10.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed two people had difficulties swimming in the waters. It was learned that a young teenager was pulled from the water shortly before 4.30pm. But Derby City Council confirmed the 18-year-old’s body was found shortly after 8pm.

Police officers are now said to be offering support to the man’s family. Major Sarah Chambers, Cabinet Member for Communities, Equalities and Public Safety, said: “Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with everyone affected by the incident at Darley Abbey on Friday afternoon.

“We are saddened to hear of this tragic loss of life and our hearts go out to the family, friends and the entire community during this incredibly difficult time.

“This heartbreaking incident is a stark reminder of the hidden dangers of our inland waterways. Even in warm weather, rivers present unique hazards that are not always visible from the riverbank.”

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed it sent crews from Kingsway, Nottingham Road, Buxton and Belper and was joined by staff from Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service’s Highfields fire station. A spokesman said: “At 12.46pm today, a 999 call was received to our control room and firefighters were called to reports that two people were in distress in the water.

“Five fire engines and three water rescue units are at the scene, including crews from Kingsway, Nottingham Road, Buxton and Belper.

“They are joined by firefighters from Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service’s Highfields station. Derbyshire Constabulary and East Midlands Ambulance Service are also joining.”

The two teenagers are understood to have been swimming in the weir near the Darley Abbey Mills complex. The incident comes just weeks after a man in his 30s needed urgent medical treatment after experiencing water problems near Darley Street.

The man was pulled from the River Derwent before being transported to hospital.
