Teenager charged over Peter Kay show ‘bomb hoax’ removed from court hearing after undressing

A 19-year-old accused of an alleged bomb hoax that forced the evacuation of a Peter Kay comedy show had to be removed from a crown court hearing after he started to strip.
The trial of Omar Majed, who appeared at Birmingham Crown Court via video link from HMP Brinsford, was interrupted when prison officers removed the defendant from the room after he began removing his gray prison tracksuit bottoms.
Judge Andrew Smith KC was trying to inform the defendant, who was not brought to court during the hearing due to the need for psychiatric reports, that he should appear next time.
Judge Smith cut his remarks to Majed short, noting in court records that jail staff understandably escorted the defendant out of the video hearing room.
A further case management hearing for Majed, of Saltley, Birmingham, who is accused of giving false information to police contrary to the Criminal Justice Act, has been scheduled for July 27, with a provisional two-week trial date scheduled for November 3.
Kay, 52, was carried off stage during her show at Birmingham’s Utilita Arena on May 1, and the show was canceled following the evacuation.
West Midlands Police later said “nothing suspicious was found” during the searches.
In an update on May 2, the force said: “Orders were given to evacuate the arena last evening following reports of a suspicious bag being left in the area.
“Following searches, nothing suspicious was found and we are grateful to everyone for their cooperation and understanding.
“As always, our priority is the public’s safety.”
The show was part of Kay’s Better Late Than Never national tour, where all proceeds will be donated to 12 cancer charities.
