Telangana Assembly Passes Bill Mandating Employees and Elected Representatives to Care for Elderly Parents

Hyderabad: The Telangana Legislative Assembly has formally passed the ‘Care of Parents by Employees’ Bill, a legislative measure designed to ensure that elderly parents are financially and emotionally supported by their children.
Addressing the assembly, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy expressed deep sorrow over the increasing trend of parental neglect. He noted that parents sacrifice all their energy and resources to raise their children, but many children abandon them once they become independent. Calling out behavior that “makes society hang its head in shame,” he lamented that it is inherently painful to have to enact a law for something that should be a natural bond of affection.
Emphasizing the need for the new state bill, the Chief Minister pointed out the limitations of the existing Central legislation, enacted in 2007, which limits the maximum maintenance allowance for parents to only ₹10,000.
Taking a strong moral stance, CM Revanth Reddy said that anyone who does not look after the welfare of their parents should face social boycott, adding that those who cannot take care of their parents have no right to live in society. He also explained that this strict new law will not only apply to government employees but will also hold elected public representatives accountable.
