Telangana health department warns of heatstroke symptoms as temperatures set to rise further

With temperatures expected to rise further in the next three days, the Telangana Health Department on Sunday, May 17, 2026, warned citizens to look out for symptoms such as confusion, seizures, rapid heartbeat and body temperatures above 40°C; All of these can indicate serious heat-related illness that requires immediate medical attention.

In an advisory issued by the Directorate of Public Health and Family Welfare, the ministry said that the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a gradual increase of 2 to 3 degrees in maximum temperatures across Telangana in the coming days. This is the third heatwave advisory issued by the health ministry this summer.

The warning warned people to avoid going outdoors between 12 noon and 3pm, when heat exposure is at its peak. Citizens were also advised to avoid strenuous physical activities in the afternoon and not to walk barefoot outdoors.

The Ministry of Health called on people to stay hydrated by drinking enough water even if they are not thirsty, and recommended using Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS), lemon juice, buttermilk and fruit juices to prevent dehydration. People traveling outdoors are advised to carry water bottles with them. The recommendation also encouraged the consumption of seasonal fruits and vegetables with high water content, such as watermelon, musk melon, oranges, grapes, pineapple and cucumber.

The ministry also advised citizens to stay indoors in cool, well-ventilated areas as much as possible. Households were told to keep windows and curtains, especially on the sunny side of the house, closed during the day and to open them at night to allow cooler air circulation.

Danger signs listed by the Ministry of Health include nausea, vomiting, hot and dry skin, throbbing headache, dizziness, fainting, muscle cramps, rapid heartbeat and rapid shallow breathing.
