The Australian federal government has issued a statement to leading telecommunications provider Telstra reminding it of its key responsibilities to ensure customers can contact emergency services during ongoing network outage.

According to a statement from the office of Acting Communications and Transport Minister Kristy McBain: “The Australian government has been notified by Telstra of an outage affecting a large number of mobile calls and connections. Like all telecommunications companies, Telstra is required to notify customers and emergency services of any major outage.

“Australian phones also need to fall back on other networks for 000 access.”

In the same statement, the Australian government said it was aware of rail disruptions affecting Victorians, with regional train operator V/Line’s services coming to a halt.

The statement said: “We understand Telstra is working to resolve the issue and arrangements are being made for affected rail passengers.”
